To the Editor: On behalf of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, the Society of Graduate Students, and the Graduate Teaching Assistants Union (Public Service Alliance of Canada Local 610), we wish to express our dismay at the article “So you want to date a teaching assistant?
” by Robert Nanni, in the Frosh Issue August 20, 2014 of the Gazette.
Over 2,500 Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) every year contribute to upholding the standards of academic excellence expected at Western.
Through their work leading tutorials, running laboratories, marking assignments, evaluating group-work, and proctoring exams, GTAs play an important role in the quality of undergraduate education at our university.
It involves TAs, Facebook stalking, “three days of people losing their minds on Twitter” and a letter demanding a student editor vacate his post. It has triggered condemnations from the related university’s provost, a local women’s group and the Twitterati.A teaching assistant works under the guidance and supervision of the Course Supervisor who is responsible for setting the course objectives, content and method of instruction as well as final grades and grading practices of the course.All those hired as Teaching Assistants at Mc Gill University are required to be a member of the Association of Graduate Students Employed at Mc Gill (AGSEM) - Mc Gill's Teaching Union.For the past 3 years, I've helped many mighty readers kick-start their week with a Monday morning email that has them eager to get out of bed & take on the world.Sign up to start getting these emails: Jen Glantz writes stories that occupy a confessional territory where she exposes her deep love affair with New York City, her chaotically tremendous failed first dates, and the embarrassing stories that still haunt her from the second grade.
